Course Objectives Psychology is the discipline examining how thoughts and emotions distinct to humans influence behavior. Industrial-organizational (I/O) psychology is the sub-field of psychology that focuses on how thought, emotion and other psychological processes influence human behavior in the workplace. Business owners and managers, human resource managers, business consultants and I/O psychologists can benefit from a comprehensive understanding of how psychological processes and principles can positively and negatively influence individual and group behavior in the workplace. Although I/O psychology’s primary aim is to understand how psychological principles help individuals and organizations become more productive and engaged, the field is rapidly expanding to tackle emerging issues and problems facing organizations today. This will be the focus of this introductory course.
Learning Outcomes The students who succeeded in this course;
  • Describe and explain basic psychological concepts and processes that influence human behavior in the workplace, including thinking (cognition), emotions (affect) and moods, perception and attribution, personality and social characteristics, values, learning and learning styles, creativity, stress, and motivation.
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of how psychology as a scientific discipline has contributed to understanding and managing workplace behavior, and how the discipline contributes to ongoing improvement in workplace productivity, motivation, decision making and problem solving
  • Describe and explain how psychological concepts and practices inform managerial and human resource-related activities in the workplace
  • Explain how psychological phenomena negatively impact individual and group behavior in the workplace
  • Employ psychological concepts and processes to encourage and produce positive individual and group behavior in the workplace and solve organizational problems
  • Evaluate the consequences and challenges of applying generic I/O psychological principles, theories and techniques to unique individuals with different psychological, social and cultural characteristics.
  • Identify and debate the ethical and cultural implications of I/O practices and interventions in the workplace
Course Description This course covers the fundamental theories and contemporary researches in I/O psychology field. Throughout this course theoretical and practical studies about foundational concepts of individual behavior (like emotions, personality, attitudes…) and their effects on group behavior and organizational processes will be discussed

WEEKLY SUBJECTS AND RELATED PREPARATION STUDIES

1 Introduction about the course and the requirements: Aim, scope, learning outcomes, weekly journal entries, BAP Project Applications Submission of a journal entry is due on Tuesday at 01:00 pm. Submissions should be done via email to burcu.guneri@ieu.edu.tr This journal entry will have two parts. The first part is a bulleted list of the 3-6 things you learned that you thought were most important and useful about that topic form the reading list. The second part is how what will be covered that week will influence you personally. That is, how you will apply that information to your own behavior or career. What I want you to do is describe how this applies to you personally, how it will influence your attitudes, cognitions and behaviors as a professional in our field, not why you think the point is important. The journal entry for each week will be between 700-1000 words. After the class discussion, you are free to make adjustments on your entry with one condition: your adjustments should be visible. You may study on the first version with track changes open. The last version should be submitted via email no later than following Friday.
